Shaarey Zedek Funeral Coordinator (Part-Time)

Congregation Shaarey Zedek, the largest and oldest Conservative egalitarian congregation in Western Canada, is seeking a person with knowledge and understanding of Jewish burial practices and traditions to fill a part-time position as the synagogue’s FUNERAL COORDINATOR.

Meeting with families to plan the funeral of a loved one is a special honour. The candidate selected for this position will be compassionate and patient with the bereaved, accurate and timely in their work, and flexible with their time. Although previous experience in planning funerals or other life cycle events would be an asset, it is not a requirement to apply. During the training process, the Life Cycle Director, Rabbi, and Executive Director will orient the incumbent in the funeral procedures and policies unique to the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, and Shaarey Shamayim Interfaith Cemetery. Opportunities to shadow the Life Cycle Director in planning funerals, as well as review case studies will be used to provide optimal training.

This part-time position will be centered around providing back-up in the absence of the Life Cycle Director which will include being on-call every other weekend – from Friday mid-afternoon to Monday mid-morning – as well as vacation coverage, and weekday evenings on rare occasions.

The successful applicant will possess the following skillsets and administrative abilities:
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while following procedures
  • Strong organization and accurate record keeping skills
  • Ability to coordinate meeting schedule for families and clergy
  • Strong computer skills and comfortable with using technology – including the use of PC/Windows, Microsoft Outlook, and Word
  • Ability to meet with grieving families
  • Maintaining confidentiality and professionalism
