Ryan Beardy has had a multifaceted life in politics, education and journalism; prison time was only one facet of that life. On Tuesday January 26, Ryan will speak on Over Incarceration of Indigenous People. Coming from Lake St Martin First Nation, Ryan’s upbringing was marked by intergenerational trauma, which landed him on the streets of Winnipeg. At 13 years old, he first entered the Manitoba Youth Centre which led to a decade of time behind bars. Ryan has since turned his life around, and is now a public speaker, mentor, freelance journalist, and writer. After his release in 2017, Ryan has devoted himself to making others aware of the Indigenous prison crisis.
