Everyone is invited to commemorate this black day on the Jewish calendar when we will screen Episode 3 of the dramatic BBC production, Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire. The destruction of the Holy Temple by the Roman army in 66 CE, and all that followed from it, inspired the rabbis to establish the 9th day of Av as a day of mourning and fasting that has been observed by Jews around the world for more than nineteen centuries. Everyone is invited to commemorate this black day on the Jewish calendar Monday evening, August 4th, at 8 PM, when we will screen Episode 3 of the dramatic BBC production, Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire. Based on the ancient classic, The Jewish War, authored by Jewish general-turned-Roman-historian Josephus Flavius, this episode depicts one of the greatest, bloodiest rebellions in the history of the Roman Empire. The screening will go from 8 PM to 9 PM. Popcorn and drinks will be served. We will then begin our fast with the traditional candlelight reading of the Biblical book of Lamentations, which describes the aftermath of the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. The date of this destruction, as well as several other tragedies in Jewish history, also took place on the 9th day of Av. If you’ve never done a 9th of Av commemoration before, this is a rare opportunity for an experience of great depth and deep meaning for Jewish life today.
