Judaism: A Space Odyssey

Presented by Ariel Brawerman

533 people have travelled to space and reached altitudes of low-Earth-orbit or beyond - only 14 were Jewish, on a journey that challenged them to adapt physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

The view of the Earth emphasizes everything we know about Tikun Olam as we see what Carl Sagan so eloquently described as “the pale blue dot.” As our bodies are trying to adapt, our minds turn to G-d. What does Halakhah have to say for living in space? When is Shabbat? When are the holidays?

In this talk, we aim to describe the space environment as it relates to Halakhah and open up a dialogue on some of the challenges we face as humans continue to explore the universe.

Ariel Brawerman was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to Winnipeg, Canada in 2003. He is a Civil Engineer at Manitoba Hydro, working on the Keeyask Generation Project initially leading part of the environmental licensing process and now part of the construction management team. He holds a B.Sc. (2010) in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba (UofM). Ariel has always been fascinated with physics and space exploration.
